Bulldog basketball has solid start at Meeker Cowboy Shootout
Finding themselves on both sides of some lopsided scoreboards in their first weekend of competition, Moffat County boys could not help but think that two out of three ain’t bad.
The MCHS hoops squad went 2-1 during the three-day White River Electric Cowboy Shootout in Meeker, with wins over Lake County and Lotus School for Excellence to build some confidence, as well as a loss to Windsor Charter Academy to serve as a learning experience.
MoCo basketball’s first game back on the court Thursday saw them off and running with an 8-0 start, holding Lake County to only free throws in the first quarter. Leading by at least 20 points for most of the game, the Dogs slowed down defensively in the second half but nonetheless cruised to a 76-50 victory.
MCHS’s outside shooting was on point in particular, with 15 triples for the team, including eight by senior Junior Welch — who led scoring with 24 total points — and five by junior Kenyen Camilletti as part of his 22. Senior Trayson Carlson earned a double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals.
“We’re happy, we’re excited, and it’s just a great way to start off our season,” Welch said. “I think we were a little bit too cocky toward the end there, but I think we just need to remember to stay humble. Our hustle and positivity and psyching each other up was great.”
The next day was a different story as an undefeated Windsor took a 88-32 W over the Dogs as part of their perfect weekend at the tournament.
However, Moffat County boys responded Saturday with a commanding 78-49 win over Lotus and another impressive stat sheet. Camilletti led with 20 points, Welch 19, senior Landyn Bollman 15 and Carlson 12.
Both Welch and Bollman gained a double-double, earning 10 and 12 boards, respectively.
Welch noted that he’s holding nothing back in his final year of Bulldog ball.
“It’s my senior year, and I want to make the most of it,” Welch said. “We’re a team building to be a family, so I’m just grateful and excited.”
The Bulldogs will pick back up this weekend in tourney mode at game hosted by Palisade and Grand Junction.
