The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners, in collaboration with Sheriff KC Hume, has passed a resolution urging Governor Jared Polis to veto Senate Bill 25-003.

The resolution reaffirms Moffat County’s Second Amendment Sanctuary County status and expresses strong concern over the bill’s implications for constitutional rights and law enforcement. Originally declared in 2019, Moffat County’s sanctuary status underscores its firm stance in support of
Second Amendment rights and local control.

According to a news release from the county, the resolution continues that commitment, and urges the
Governor to seek alternative approaches to public safety that align with both constitutional protections
and community-based enforcement.

“Our position is clear — we will always stand up for the Constitution and the people we serve,” said
Commissioner Melody Villard, Chair of the Moffat County Board. “We believe SB 25-003 is not the
answer. Instead of compromising individual freedoms, let’s work together on practical, rights-respecting
solutions to public safety.”

Sheriff KC Hume echoed the concerns, stating, “Our duty is to uphold both the Constitution and public
safety. This bill places law enforcement in a difficult position and could compromise our ability to
maintain community trust while enforcing the law. We believe there are better solutions that don’t force a
choice between safety and rights.”

The resolution emphasizes that it is a statement of political principle and constitutional interpretation, not
a directive to any official or agency to act in violation of state or federal law.

The news release also stated that Moffat County remains open to collaborating with state leaders on balanced, effective and constitutionally sound policies that serve all Coloradans.
