Moffat County football moved to 1-2 with its latest game, falling 48-8 Friday against the Berthoud Spartans.

The Bulldogs struggled to contain a strong offensive effort by Berthoud, facing a running clock by halftime.

Despite the second half flying by, the Dogs were able to get themselves on the scoreboard in the final five minutes, as senior Zach Hedman broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown rush, also running in the two-point conversion.

Hedman has averaged triple-digit yardage in MoCo’s first three games, rushing for exactly 100 yards against the Spartans.

“It felt good to score like that,” Hedman said. “They came out to win and we fell short. I think we need to get our energy up out there.”

The Bulldogs’ next matchup is on the road with the Grand Valley Cardinals on Sept. 20, a game sandwiched by two bye weeks, leading up to league play in October.

MCHS head coach Nick Colgate said the extra prep time will help players worry less about competition and more about improving the flow of the game, especially those who are still adjusting to the varsity level.

“Overall, we’re seeing those improvements each week, but we really need to do the little things right and go from there,” he said. “I think with almost two weeks to get ready, we’ll see a huge jump in how our kids perform.”
