U.S. 40 reopens after massive rockslide near Milner

U.S. Highway 40 has reopened after a major rockslide west of Steamboat Springs near Milner spilled onto the roadway and closed the road for more than five hours.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson Lisa Schwantes said crews were working to blast the large rock into pieces small enough for construction crews to move the material off the highway.

Schwantes also said a CDOT “geotechnical team” was headed to the site to determine if there was any additional loose rock along the highway that would require further mitigation work.

Detours were set up via Twentymile Road until U.S. 40 reopened in both directions at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A CDOT official said the agency had planned to close Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon on Wednesday for cleanup work after a major tractor trailer accident occurred on I-70 on Tuesday, which would have routed traffic through Craig and Steamboat Springs. However, a decision to postpone the work was made due to the rockslide on U.S. 40.
