Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project helps pay for mammogram costs

The all-volunteer Bust of Steamboat continues after 23 years to raise and distribute financial assistance to Routt and Moffat residents for mammogram screenings and cancer treatment costs.

The nonprofit group, also known as Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project, helps pay for mammograms, wellness visits, biopsies and some treatment costs for uninsured and underinsured individuals.

The organization awarded more than $50,000 in assistance in 2023. The group’s efforts spread the word that breast cancer is survivable with the help of yearly mammograms. The group has raised more than $900,000 since 2000 with the support of area businesses that organize fundraising efforts. Individuals can promote Paint the Town Pink by hosting a fundraiser any time in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Each year 45 to 50 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Yampa Valley alone,” according to organizers. “That’s four to five women a month. Your neighbor could be in the fight for her life.”

“The Bust of Steamboat needs talented and passionate folks to help guide the next 10 years of our life-changing involvement in the Routt and Moffat county areas,” according to organizers.
